Weather At Akagera National Park
Weather At Akagera National Park.
General weather of Akagera National Park.
Akagera is located in a low-lying area of the eastern region of Rwanda with an altitude of approximately 1,250 to 1,850 above sea level. The climate of Akagera is warmer and drier due to its closeness to the savannah ecosystem of Tanzania, unlike the cooler and more temperate central and western regions of Rwanda.
The park has tropical savannah climatic conditions with wet and dry seasons. The temperature varies between 20°C and 28°C (68°F and 82°F), but on the high school days, it can even be as high as 30°C (86°F). Evenings are also colder, and the temperatures can sometimes fall to 15 °C (59°F).
The location is highly affected by weather in the park due to its closeness to the equator and the observed altitudes. The rain falls are seasonal, and although it promotes dense vegetation during wet months, the dry months are the best months to view wildlife.
Rainfall Patterns
It receives two main rainy seasons, which are bimodal, and the rainfall pattern in Akagera is:
Long Rains: March to May
Short rainy season: October- November.
The park has two dry seasons between these periods of rainy weather:
Long Dry Season: June -September.
Short Dry Season: December -February.
In Akagera, the mean annual rainfall is 800 to 1,200 millimetres, but it may vary over the years and in certain areas of the park. During the wet seasons, the park is turned into a green, lush land and during the dry seasons, the plains are left golden and dusty, which gives the park a different yet equally magnificent Rwanda safari experience.
Seasonal Breakdown
Long Rains (March-May)
It is the rainiest season of the year. The rains are very regular, and certain sections of the park are muddy and hard to reach. Thunderstorms in the afternoon are frequent, and dense vegetation cover may deprive visibility.
Temperatures: 20-27°C (68-80°F)
Landscape: Green and green, wildflowers are blooming, waters are rejuvenated
Wildlife Viewing: Wild animals are more spread because of the presence of water and vegetation cover, making wildlife viewing more difficult. Nevertheless, it is the optimum period to watch birds, because migratory birds are available and they are reproducing.
Visitor Tip: Waterproof material and well-built shoes are necessary. Safaris are more adventurous and less predictable.
Long Dry Season (June-September)
It is an ideal moment to go to Akagera in pursuit of the traditional safari experiences. The amount of rainfall is very low, and dry grasslands and open savannah are the main features of the park. Water bodies become smaller so that the animals are attracted to rivers and lakes, where they are easily spotted.
Temperatures: 22-28°C (72-82°F), and colder nights.
Condition of land: Golden plains, dry vegetation and low river levels.
Wildlife Viewing: Excellent. Lake Ihema, the Akagera River and other permanent water sources are the sources of animals. Commonly seen are lions, elephants, giraffes and buffalo. The vegetation is also thinner, thus making the predators, such as the leopards and cheetah, easy to spot.
Visitor Tip: You should come in with sunscreen, hats, and lots of water because it may be too hot in the middle of the day. Drives in the morning and evening are the most rewarding.
Dry Season (summer) (October-November)
The rainfall is moderate during this time, and it is normally in the afternoon. The rains are not so intense as in the months of March-May, but they rejuvenate the park, and a revival of greenery and filling of seasonal pools is realised.
Temperatures: 20-26°C (68-78°F)
Landscape: A blend of vegetation, which is green and wet.
Wildlife Viewing: Good. Animals are not going to sleep, and birds are spectacular. Fresh grazing is beneficial to herbivores like antelope and zebras.
Parking Hint: There are also slippery roads, and it is best to have 4×4 cars. Carry lightweight rain gear.
Short Dry Season (Hot season-December-February)
This is a comparatively dry season, which is sometimes accompanied by a few showers. It is also the season between the rains and has splendid conditions for Rwanda safaris.
Weather: It is hot, 22-29°C (72- 84°F), though sometimes it is even hotter.
Landscape: The grass is starting to dry up, and there is no lack of water resources.
Wildlife Viewing: Very good. There is a lot of movement of animals, and it is not as congested as it is during the long dry season. Watching the birds is also fulfilling since most of the birds nest during this period.
Tourist Hint: It is an excellent place to be in early April rather than in the busier June-September season.

Best Time to Visit Akagera
The long dry season (June-September) is regarded as the most appropriate period of the year to explore Akagera National Park in terms of wildlife safari. Game drives are more convenient, visibility is better, and animals are concentrated in water sources.
Nevertheless, the dry season (December-February) is also great, and the number of visitors is reduced, and the conditions of wildlife observation are also favourable.
The most rewarding period for bird watchers is the rainy seasons (March-May and October-November) because there are migratory birds and the breeding plumage is at its best.
Finally, the most suitable time is always a matter of individual preferences:
High season in big game safaris.
Birdwatching, photography and green scenery.
Wildlife: How Weather Determines Behaviour.
The weather is a very important factor as regards the habits of the animals of Akagera:
Elephants, buffalo and zebras are some of the herbivores that approach the permanent water bodies during the dry season to give the amazing wildlife scenes. Predators, on their part, track these herds, creating more opportunities for predator-prey relationships.
During the rainy season, the animals also disperse all around the park, thus making it less predictable but allowing viewing the animals in better health, as they feed on the fresh vegetation.n
The rain patterns have a great effect on the birds, and breeding and nesting are associated with months of rain.
Tips for Visitors
Pack on its own: Light materials during hot days, warm material during cold evenings and raincoats in wet months.
Carry insect repellent: Mosquitoes are more vigorous in rainy months.
Drive a 4×4: This is necessary during the rains when there are muddy or slippery roads.
Plan game tourism: Morning and evening are the best times, and midday should be avoided, as it is hot.
Conclusion
The Akagera National Park identity is largely determined by the weather that defines the landscape, the behaviour of wildlife and the experiences of visitors. The green fields of the rainy seasons, all the way to the golden plains of the dry season, provide something unique. To safari lovers, the dry season is unbeatable in terms of game viewing, and the wet months are a good season for the birdwatchers.
